Origin[edit]

South America: lower Amazon River basin.

Females are fuller in the belly and larger than males.

Tank compatibility[edit]

A peaceful shoaling fish, keep in groups of 6 or more and with other peaceful community fish.

Diet[edit]

Will take most foods including pellets and flake as well as live/frozen food such as bloodworm and daphnia.

Feeding regime[edit]

Feed once or twice a day.

Environment specifics[edit]

Does better in acidic water. They prefer a densely planted tank with hiding places and some open swimming space. This fish can be sensitive to water conditions, mature tanks only.

Behaviour[edit]

A peaceful shoaling community fish. If kept singly, the fish will die, must be kept in groups.

Identification[edit]

This fish has a laterally compressed body and the back is brownish black to silver, while the belly is silver. A black band extends from the gill cover through the caudal. Above is an iridescent green to yellow stripe, above this stripe is an orange line. The iris is orange to red.
Can be mistaken for Hyphessobrycon amapaensis, however H.heterorhabdus's black band under the red lateral band is much bolder than H.amapaensis.
