Environment specifics[edit]

This hardy plant is a fast-growing stem plant suitable for beginners. It can grow in low to high lighting and is good at consuming excess nutrients in the water to help prevent algae problems. Because of its fast growth, water sprite can quickly over-shadow smaller plants and overrun the tank, especially if CO2 is in use.
Water sprite has can also be grown as as a floating plant. It develops broad, round leaves and may even grow out of the water. When rooted, the crown will grow large with many stems and fronds, which is good for raising livebearers and other types of baby fish.

Propagation[edit]

Like most stem plants, it can be propagated from trimmings when you prune the plant. Just float the cutting at the water surface and it will start growing roots down toward the ground. It also naturally forms little plantlets that have their own leaves and roots.

Identification[edit]

A bushy plant with lacy leaves when grown underwater and broad, rounded fronds when grown floating at the surface
