Origin

South America: coastal streams of the Guiana Shield.

Sexing

Females may appear plumper than males.

Tank compatibility

An active fish that should be kept in shoals of 6 or more. Is fast swimming and can be nippy, so should only be kept with robust similar sized fish.

Diet

Will accept most foods including pellet and flake as well as live/frozen food such as brine shrimp and bloodworm.

Feeding regime

Feed once or twice a day.

Environment Specifics

Requires a spacious tank with plenty of open swimming space as well as some hiding places. Prefers a medium to strong current and can be sensitive to water quality issues. They do require a laterally spacious tank due to their high activity levels.

Behaviour

A very active shoaling fish.

Identification

An elongate fish with large eyes in comparison to the head. The body is iridescent silver while the fins have hints of orange with black. The caudal fin is forked.
